  2. writer, born in Geneva, Switzerland.
  3. Discourses on the Origins of Inequality 1754
  4. made his name: he denounced civilized society
  5. and postulated the paradox of the superiority
  6. of the `noble savage'. Social Contract 1762
  7. emphasized the rights of the people over
  8. those of the government, and stated that a
  9. government could be legitimately overthrown
  10. if it failed to express the general will of
  11. the people. It was a significant influence on
  12. the French Revolution. In the novel Emile
  13. 1762 he outlined a new theory of education,
  14. based on natural development and the power of
  15. example, to elicit the unspoiled nature and
  16. abilities of children. Confessions, published
  17. posthumously 1782, was a frank account of his
  18. occasionally immoral life and was a founding
  19. work of autobiography.
